101 Introduction to Investing
(Prerequisite – None)
Investment refers to the concept of deferred consumption, which involves purchasing an asset, giving a loan or keeping funds in a bank account with the aim of generating future returns. Various investment options are available, offering differing risk-reward tradeoffs. An understanding of the core concepts and a thorough analysis of the options can help an investor create a portfolio that maximizes returns while minimizing risk exposure.
101.1–Investing in a Recession
(Prerequisite – None, Recommended- EM 101.3 – Introduction to Valuation and Investing)
Students should have a basic understanding of valuation and investing concepts. Students will learn how people make money during a financial crisis, define recession, and the importance of cryptocurrencies.
101.2 –Cryptocurrency; Regulation, Trading, and the Future
(Prerequisite – None, Recommended- EM 101.3 – Introduction to Valuation and Investing)
Students should have a basic understanding of valuation and investing concepts. Students will understand and explain the regulations currently in place regarding cryptocurrency and the ones that may be expected in the near future. Students will list the challenges involved in creating cryptocurrency policies, explain why joining a crypto-community can be helpful, and summarize where we can expect to see the crypto-community heading in the future.
101.3–Cryptocurrency Masterclass
(Prerequisite – None, Recommended- EM 101.5 –Cryptocurrency, Regulation, Trading, and the Future)
Students should have a basic understanding of cryptocurrency regulation and trading concepts. Students will discuss the crypto market and exchange, compare Bitcoin and Alt Coin, and contrast different cryptocurrencies. Student will understand what a crypto wallet is used for, describe how to use a crypto wallet, and analyze how secure crypto wallets are.
101.4 – Stock Investing and Investment Firms- 40 Contact Hours
(Prerequisite – None)
Students will learn the process of choosing and buying stocks, the various contemporary and legacy investment firms, and components of common and preferred stock.
101.5– Fundamentals of Cash Flow Statement and Corporate Governance
(Prerequisite – None, Recommended- EM 101.3 – Introduction to Valuation and Investing)
Students should have a basic understanding of valuation and investing concepts. Students will understand what is meant by a cash flow statement, identify the different categories of cash flow statement, list different types of cash flow statements. Students will expect to outline the process of preparing a cash flow statement as well as explain the importance of a cash flow statement to investors.
101.6 – Introduction to Risk, Return, and the Historical Record
(Prerequisite – None)
This course is geared to students with little or no experience with the topic of investment risks. It is designed to introduce students to risks and returns of trading securities. Students will gain a general understanding of calculating the realized return from an investment, measuring the risk of an investment, and historical rates data for U.S. financial securities.
