Program Format / Programs
Students learn educational and job skills in a variety of lessons. The lessons are determined based on the job market in our community. Students will work on the development of job skills in the ACI Learning and Transition Center. When students have developed the necessary job skills, they will be taken into the community and given the opportunity to practice these job skills in an employment setting. The ACI class curriculum is designed with the following premise in mind: “the best way to learn a skill is to do the skill.” The more closely the teaching setting matches the real situation, the more likely the student will be able to perform the skill in real life.
ACI classes are organized into nine or more separate lessons. Some lessons, like “Anger Management,” have more than one topic to cover. Each lesson or topic has a similar format as outlined below:
- Objectives
- Materials Needed
- Supplemental Resources
- Instructional Format
- Signs of Generalization – (Was the lesson understood and can the student execute the task?)
ACI classes use a developmentally appropriate integrated approach designed to strengthen the students’ abilities in the following areas:
- Personal Management Skills
- General Social Skills
- Drug Resistance Skills
Programs are customized for the specific student. If students are going through the state ACI Transition Institute-to-Work Programs or Vocational Wavier Programs, there is no set amount of time established for these programs. The Vocational Rehabilitation counselors or Department of Human Service case managers establish the type and length of services needed for ACI to provide for each student according to his/her needs and the outcomes desired.
Classes that are part of those programs offering Certificates of Competency will require forty (40) contact hours (Two hours a day, five days a week for four weeks). A contact hour is defined as an hour of training received through direct instruction. Each program also will include ten (10) contact hours of service learning/community integration to give the student some exposure to the career field. Instruction and format for individual classes will vary.
